Dear friends of Musicians for Peace

Musicians for Peace has now formed a coordinating committee to help organize and promote 40th Anniversary Woodstock events in 2009 and beyond. As you know, some of the previous Woodstock reunions and anniversaries got bad press, were accused of being too commercial and of booking some bands that were out of character with what the true spirit of Woodstock was all about. We are a grassroots ad hoc group raising our voice to insure that this doesn't happen again.

We plan to hold that candle for what is know as the Woodstock and Rainbow Nations and link with as many of the festivals as possible that want to celebrate the 40th anniversary as a collaborative effort.

We are doing a butterfly release at Woodstock West Fest in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park's Speedway Meadows planned for Sunday, October 25, 2009. Our members are doing the Green Zone there and interested vendors and sponsors should contact me at bflyspirit8@aol.com Please also see the producers pages at www.2b1records.com/woodstock40sf and www.2b1records.com

This show is being produced by Boots Hughston of 2b1 MutiMedia and the event's Green Zone stage and vending area is being coordinated by Musicians for Peace board member Douglas Kolberg of Green Zone Productions. Interested vendors and sponsors can contact me at bflyspirit8@aol.com and I will forward your email to Doug

Michael Lang is also interested in our proposal for an event he is planning in New York - TBA

We also plan to create a rooster of intergenerational musicians that represent this spirit and are available to play at Woodstock Anniversary Tribute events, including some that were at the original event.

The first Woodstock exceeded even the expectations of its visionary founders because it transformed itself into a spontaneous and magical happening for all those involved and that experienced it. Woodstock represents something special even to those that were too young to attend or not even born then. What started as a well planned and ticketed event embraced the elements of chaos and hoards of expectant concert goers and became a free concert. It will always be remembered as the greatest of all gathering ... some half million people celebrating peace and love together in the midst of a tragic war.

"Some came to sing, some came to pray. Some came to keep the dark away. We were so close, there was no room. We bled inside each other's wounds. We all had caught the same disease. And we all sang the songs of peace." - Melanie's Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)

Might you want to be on our advisory committee and take a more active role? If so, please send me your contact info, a short bio, a photo and a statement of what the original event meant to you, what you might like to see happen for the 40th anniversary and what you have to offer to help make this happen.

Please forward this message to anyone you think would like to be on or committee or to any performers or bands that may want to be included on our Woodstock Anniversary Tribute Performer list.

I recently found out that the Obama transition team is interested as well. LouRicca invited Obama under the Musicians and Fine Artists for World Peace - MFAWP banner since, out of all of our organizations, MFAWP is the organizer on top of all of our individual ones. Please see our Obama portrait on my blog at http://www.myspace.com/musiciansforpeace

When Joni Mitchell wrote the lyrics to her Woodstock song (inspired by Essra Mohawk), "By the time we got to Woodstock, we were half a million strong and everywhere was song and celebration. And I dreamed I saw the bombers riding shotgun in the sky, turning into butterflies above our nation," it was more than inspirational, it was truly prophetic. In fact, in 1997 we were invited to do a butterfly release at the Woodstock Reunion in Bethel, New York from the original Woodstock stage. What was called 'flower power' then is evolving into 'butterfly power' now and being embraced by even more people than embraced the peace and love generation of the 60's.

BTW, Essra is one of our board members and played at the 40th Anniversary of the Summer of Love in Golden Gate Park and was in the Mothers of Invention and the Jerry Garcia Band. She was also my host in Nashville. I was at her home in Nashville in October 2008 setting up a Musicians for Peace Chapter when we got a call from Melanie, also from Nashville, and heard about our meeting. She has since joined our cause as well as more than 3000 others in 57 countries including Donovan, Patti LaBelle, Pete Seeger, Melba Moore, the New Rascals, Willie Nelson's Peace Research Institute, the Dalai Lama, Holly Near, Country Joe, Wayne Dyer, Patch Adams, Jean Houston, Dennis Kucinich and Deepak Chopra's Alliance for a New Humanity.

We are also willing and looking forward to doing a butterfly release at any of the Woodstock Anniversary events that would welcome us, including having the attendees form a huge butterfly image as was done by conceptual artist Daniel Dancer of Art for the Sky at the Presidio Middle School in San Francisco at http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/11/07/BA6P13VLKG.DTL and on our website at http://passion.edu/elearn/mod/resource/view.php?id=1705
Please see the video, that includes Daniel Dancer and myself getting the kids in position at http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/object/article?f=/c/a/2008/11/07/BA6P13VLKG.DTL&o=6 and a longer version at http://www.vimeo.com/2209733
For more information about Daniel Dancer's Art for the Sky program and images from past projects, go to http://www.inconcertwithnature.com

Dear Alan,

Just thought you might see this (Woodstock intro and history links) and realize where the knowledge and honestly earned desire to come up with something as simple as 3 days of peace and music was born and came from. It sought of hurts to think about those that have forgotten the one that gave his heart and soul to chase our dream and fight for it's integrity. Some have no concept of why and how our nation could be born and perpetrated. I do not care much for the phoney claims by wannabees who had nothing to do with 69. Let them own Woodstock 2 and 3. Much better them living a lie than me.

Milestones (Speech): A salute to the 1969 generation

Woodstock 1969 was a remarkable and iconic event that demonstrated the power of music to shape economic, political, environmental and social aspects of our society. The generation of 1969 fought for peace, love, and humanity. The strong movement for humanity and a world with unity among nation states was the vision of the 1969 generation and found an expression through music on the legendary stage of founders, Mr. Michael Lang and Mr. Artie Kornfeld in 1969 and this year's 40th anniversary celebration, its milestone.

In retrospect, we cannot help but think of the milestones and the legacy of Woodstock 1969. I believe that contemporary society have benefited tremendously from the generation of the 1960s. Woodstock 1969 impact on American society resulted in achieving musicians for peace, and this year we want to carry the torch and the legacy of the spirit of Woodstock 1969 to the next generation through the "Youth for Peace through Music" campaign.

The strong environmental movements, known as environmental protection and Hog Farm's free meals program, feeding hundreds of thousands of people depicts, which is known as poverty alleviation, were established in 1960s. The seeds that were planted 40 years ago resulted in an ever evolving process, currently known as "Sustainable Development." Thus, from the stage of Woodstock 1969 to the globalization of musician for peace and love with embracing the world musicians-whom subscribe to humanitarian causes, from the Hog Farm kitchen to World Bank and United Nation's Millennium Goal for Poverty alleviation, from the generation of protesting war with Civil Rights movements and supporting environmental protection to the winning of the Nobel Peace Prize for the "An Inconvenient Truth " by Al Gore ,and the election of Preseident Barrack H. Obama, we can say that the milestones have been achieved and the legacy has been established for the generation of 1960s. Seed planted from generation of the 1960 bear's fruits for our generation and the next generation.

The intellectuals of the 1960s arouse the interests of civil society through publications, such as the publication in 1962 of Rachel Carson's book Silent Spring. According to the US Info State Government International Information Program, recollection of civil society sentiments shifted to being environmentally conscious. The movement of poverty alleviation (social), environmental protection and economic development has now evolved into the new mantra of "Sustainable Development." We are experiencing a change in the tides of human progress and that is to witness American Corporations and multinationals embracing the core values established from the 1960s in the contemporary form of Sustainable Development. From the grassroots organization of the 1969 to the Boardrooms of Fortune 500 companies in 2009, sustainable development has become an integrated part of business activities. From my generation to the generation of the 1960s, I salute you for the foundations you have made for our generations and the future generation. I say well done to a generation who reached a milestone and have a lot to celebrate at the Woodstock 2009 -40th Anniversary, through Music with Peace and Love, and once again, on the legendary stage of Woodstock 2009.

BIO: Douglas has been involved in event production for over twenty years. In the past five years he has brought together his experience as an event and festival producer/coordinator and years of eco/green activism to create Green Festivals throughout the bay area. His early eco activism includes working on the Clear Water Project: cleaning up the Hudson River and booking fund rising events along the way. He was the first to bring a green focus to the Philadelphia folk festival while he work with the logistics team of the festival. Over the years he has worked for and created many partnerships with organization and individuals in the festival production and green activism world, Mission underground event began as an underground roving club and later established itself as legitimate and unique event production company bringing in a mix of live art, diverse international performance, organic catering and interior festival design. We produced well over a two hundred events and created a platform for many performers that went on to having prominent careers in the music industry such as Charley Hunter trio, Michael Franti and Spearhead [to name a few]. It was at one of these events that the producers of the Summer of Love International brought in Mission Underground to produce a series of six out door festivals. The green focus of these events and others to follow lead to a restructuring and renaming the company to Green Zone Productions. GZP's reputation for educational and entertaining events came to the attention of the festival producers of SF Carnival and GZP was brought on to produce Zone Verde. [The largest outdoor eco village produced in SF festival history [over 200,000 people attended] From that point on GZP has became one of the most sort after green event planning companies on the West cost and has produced many high profile green events.

We are currently involved in these up coming festivals for 2009:
The 40th Anniversary of Woodstock
SF Carnival [Zona Verde]
Latino Green Living expo
Green Halloween
SF Green Fashion expo

Toney Burkhart
San Francisco, CA

www.myspace.com/toneyburkhart
Stage manager - Worked for Bill Graham back at the old Fillmore West in San Francisco helping run the space. He was stage manager for the Chet Helms Tribal Stomp Memorial and again for the San Francisco Summer of Love 40th Anniversary concert.

"It would be my pleasure to be on the advisory committee of the 40th Anniversary Woodstock Tour. Also, if Boots will be part of this I am sure we will be working together."

I had a chance to meet Essra Mohawk shortly before getting here and the others up on stage. But I did not know that Essra inspired Joni to write that Woodstock song. Very cool! So, now we have butterfly power, very interesting. As long as it promotes Peace I do not care what its called.

My roll has been and sometimes is one of the best back stage managers out there. What I am best at is making sure every musician and act gets on stage on time without any problems.

I was Bill Graham's right hand man at the Fillmore West and had the duties of overseeing 38 employees that made the Fillmore run smoothly.
The producer Boots Hughston of The Chet Helms Memorial held in Golden Gate Park in September of 2005 contacted me and asked if I would be his stage manager as he knew me from the Fillmore days of the 1960s. I agrees and put up 21 Acts on stage that day from 10 a.m. to 5:35 p.m. without a hitch. Then in September 2nd of 2007 I again working with Boots came to do the 40th Anniversary of the Summer of Love at Golden Gate Park this time I put up 29 Acts between 10 a.m. and 5:30 p.m and this was no easy task as there were over 6000 back stage and more the whole day as I had to find, gather and prepare each act to be ready to go up on stage on time. I received the best compliment in my life from the head of the Stage Crew who flew in from Nashville Tennessee to help out for this historic concert celebration of the Summer of Love.

These guys are regarded as the bast stage hands that one could have, they worked for Elvis Presley as his stage hands and then for Waylon Jennings until Waylon passed away. They also work for the Rolling Stones when they tour concerts in America. To get to the compliment they gave me, I had just put up on stage the last of the acts for the 40th and one of the guys pulled me over to the side on the back of the stage and said, ""Hey Toney, I would like to tell you something, first talk a look back there as I was looking over the field full of people that was fenced  off for the Act and there guest, then he said to me, you know Toney when we met you at Boots place during that last meeting before the concert and you came up and introduced your self to us saying that your too were from Tennessee and that you were going to make some history we all thought you were full of yourself acting so flamboyant and we just put that down as another persons ego. But let me tell yea, we all were taking short brake when we started looking back at all the people back there like you see now and we saw you running here and there nonstop and it dawned on us that it was just you getting all these bands in the tents and then bring them up on stage. Man! we looked at each other and  one of said do you think if all four of us could do what Toney's doing and do it as well? We looked at each other and said no! We now know that your the worlds best back stage manager."" He then went on to say ""If you ever come to Nashville and need a job I know some people who would love to give you a job!""
That to me was the best compliment given to me in my life! Alan, I do not know if you have a place for a guy like myself among the Musicians and Artists and do what you thinks best for your Musicians and Artists for Peace group.

I am a big supporter of music in that I try to help bring off great concerts around the Bay Area when asked.

I would hope that we here can be part of the 40th Anniversary of Woodstock. As you know back when I was working for Bill Graham I was to come and help put on our part from the West Coast on behalf of what Bill was into back then but I had to quit and leave then. Hey if I can get airfare and a place to sleep while there I can fly anywhere to be back stage manager. Keep that in mind if things turn to the better."

Woodstock was a never-before-seen event. It was an event that was emblematic of the promise of change, of hope, of the joy and magic of an era. To celebrate an anniversary remembrance of this historical celebration it would be wonderful if there were also something BIG and never-before-seen, something that would stand up and get people's attention. Something as unprecedented and iconic as Woodstock deserves no less.

What I propose is the recreation of the famous Woodstock logo, guitar and dove, or some version of it . . . a gigantic living painting made of people and other materials similar to other projects of this nature that I have done. The image would be filmed from the sky and might include music, ala, musical notes emerging from the image or some type of choreography and combination with live music, ceremony, butterfly release, etc. The possible parameters are plenty. It could be the largest image of this kind done to date, with over 3000 participants perhaps. It would be a spectacular image that could travel through the world's media and get almost instant recognition and inspire the recovery of the dream that began in the sixties: Love is the Answer!

Bio: Daniel conducts week-long residencies with schools and communities called Art For the Sky. He works with hundreds of people at a time who each become individual "paint drops" in giant living paintings of images that only make sense from the sky. This art form dates back over two thousand years to the famous Nazca Lines of Peru.

The famous philosopher, Emanuel Kant said that if human evolution is going to continue man must evolve from homo sapiens into new beings he called, homo neumana . . . "beings who have learned to see the whole first." In a nut shell, that is the core teaching of this art form. Just as these sky art images make no sense on the ground, so it is with the problems that confront us as individuals and as a society. Creative solutions live in the big picture view. We must couple our imaginations with our psychic wings to get above our problems and harvest the creative energy that resides there. This temporary art also demonstrates the power of many individuals coming together as ONE to create something beautiful as well as the importance of embracing impermanence. To visit his sky gallery see www.artforthesky.com

On November 6, 2008, Dancer created a giant 'living painting' of an endangered Mission Blue Butterfly 100 ft long on the Presidio Middle School playing field in San Francisco made up of over 300 children, teachers and community members, including local activist Alan Moore. "The program that Daniel Dancer is bringing to the Presidio Middle School this Thursday will be an inspiration for these kids for years to come," says Moore." Whenever you bring butterflies into the classroom, from art to the environment, the children respond amazing well," Moore adds. "Butterflies are environmental indicators for global warming, food safety, pesticide misuse, deforestation, habitat destruction and many other issues and have been key components of violence reduction programs in many cities. Just look at all the butterfly images on peace walls and murals you will find across the bay area, including the City of Richmond." Please see photos and story at http://passion.edu/elearn/mod/resource/view.php?id=1705

On January 8, 2009 on a Southside Chicago playing field, 800 youth and teachers braved extreme cold and snow to become living paint drops in a 12,000 square foot, smiling portrait of President Elect Obama with the word "YES!" underneath formed by recycled cans. This was the ultimate "green" Obama art image and the only one of him made of people. Dressed in black, white and red, participants became "human drops of paint" in an image that only made sense from the sky . . . one of the main teachings of this fascinating art form which dates back 2500 years to the Nazca Desert of Peru. This event was the culmination of a 5 day Art For the Sky school residency. And like the many animals and endangered species Dancer has helped other schools to create, Obama Sky was a gift from participants from Earth to Sky in gratitude for all the blessings of. And in this case, it is also a huge and historic endorsement of America's first African-American president, a way for Chicago youth and teachers to inaugurate Mr. Obama in their own, special, earthly way . . . the largest Obama art yet created on our soon to be president's home turf.

"This was an absolutely incredible and historic undertaking by our schools to participate in a highly unique and ancient art form to celebrate America's first African-American president." -Vaida Williams, Alex Haley School Principal

"Only from the point of view of eagles and clouds can we truly make sense of the problems we face as a society. Our highest creative potential lives in this big picture view of the world which I call our "skysight". Each sky art event is an attempt to awaken this way of seeing. Being an equal part of something magnificent, like Obama Sky, is a life-changing event that participants will remember and refer back to their whole lives." Daniel Dancer

Daniel is the author of Shards and Circles: Artistic Adventures in Spirit and Ecology, a 12 year oddessy of creating healing art in endangered ecosystems from found materials. Daniel has a MA in Human Development and lives in an earth-sheltered home in Rowena Wilds, a model eco-development he founded on 200 acres in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. Daniel's photographs have been published in hundreds of books and magazines world wide.

It is an honor and a privilege, to be a part of the Woodstock 40th anniversary events committee. I am also proud to be a new member of Musician's and Fine Artist's for Peace and I look forward to making a significant contribution towards furthering it's causes. I have always wanted to be doing this very thing. It's been a dream of mine since the first time I saw the Woodstock movie. My parents actually had taken me to one of the 10th anniversary events when I was 8, and all I remember is wandering around in and out of all these blankets and colorful people. It made quite an impression.

Some years later I ended up watching the movie for Woodstock and Richie Havens set is what originally inspired me to start playing guitar. Artie Kornfeld and Michael Lang were my heroes as a teen growing up. I always wondered what it would feel like to be responsible for bringing about such a magical event. It broke my heart when I attended and witnessed the chaos and destruction of Woodstock 99, and the mosh pits of Woodstock 94. They were not the Woodstock I was looking for.

What I would like to see this incarnation of Woodstock become, is what it once was: A peaceful event that inspires people to be peaceful. I believe Woodstock's good name can be redeemed and, I would personally like to see it turned into a national holiday. And perhaps a global holiday, that is celebrated yearly by people all over the world, who gather in peaceful celebration of humanity to support charities, awareness of our connection with nature, and positivity towards each other in general.

Offerings: I wish to help make this event, one that all of those involved can be proud of. To accomplish this I offer my sales experience and can do bookings, internet promotions, public relations, press releases or anything else that may be required of me. I have already started a MySpace page that can serve as an outlet for updates and a place for those in contemplation of the Woodstock 40th events to congregate. Since holding my own small show I have dreamed of being able to work backstage at a larger event such as this in the hopes of gaining experience and look forward to being on site, working with a team and helping to create a positive festival experience
for those involved with putting on the event as well as the attendee's.

I am also attempting to plan a southeastern U.S. event, for the weekend prior to the actual anniversary to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Woodstock and, would love to work with anyone interested in joining me. I would like to do a free concert, or at least one where all the proceeds go to a charitable cause. I will use the experience I gain from this to work towards starting a nonprofit that works with apartment building and condominium managers to recycle abandoned furniture, that will go to families that cannot afford to buy their own. Once again, I am grateful for this opportunity and look forward to giving 110% of myself, to make this a positive experience for all those involved.

Bio: I was an extra on set for the filming of Billy Joel's Piano Man video. I am a published poet. I have received an Editor's Choice Award from the International Library of Poetry and have a collection of over 300 songs & poems that I have written.

In the mid 90's I held a festival called "The Freakers Ball" on Long Island, with 7 bands and a virtual reality experience. Very small, but I dealt with almost every aspect of the show myself as a one man army, without any issues.

I held a place as one of the top 20 salesman in the nation, for Stanley Steemer, for 4 months out of the 7 I worked for the company.

I am a recent member of the "To Write Love On Her Arms" community which is an American nonprofit organization that aims to present hope and find help for people struggling with problems such as depression, drug addiction, self-injury, and suicide.

I also do advertising/promotional work for many bands street teams through Fan Manager.

She recently performed for Musicians and Artists for Peace at the Beat Museum in San Francisco, a pre-concert for the Summer of Love and 40th Anniversary Summer of Love Festival in Golden Gate Park in 2007 which she opened with her song Summer of Love. You can see Essra's extensive discography on her website at www.EssraMohawk.com

"I was supposed to perform at the original Woodstock and finally, at the urging of Richie Havens, I got to perform at the 25th anniversary of Woodstock. Naturally, I look forward to performing at the 40th Anniversary of that incredible event, hoping to manifest the spirit of peace and love as never before! Although it will be, as all music festivals are, a trans-generational happening, I sincerely believe that it is time for our 'boomer' generation in particular to fulfill its great promise. We must now walk our talk! Fine words are not enough if our actions aren't tempered by honesty and integrity. Armed with courage and fueled by compassion, we must create peace and justice in our daily lives in order for it to ripple out to the whole world. It is time to manifest our greatest dream - the one we all share in our hearts - the dream of World Peace. Therein lies the significance of Woodstock, Michael Lang's big dream. It came true for him! Now, 40 years later, it's time for the bigger dream, the one of World Peace and Harmony to come true for all of us. I chant for this everyday."

We have to safe our planet because NO ONE else can. he question is: how? Let's take for example a headache: you can swallow aspirin as much as you can and maybe you'll not feel the pain BUT the cause of the headache will NOT disappear.

In my opinion, we can't save the world though environmental measures only, that's like aspirin for headache. The main cause is WAR and the reasons for war: oil, pharmaceutics and weapons. Money and power of a few. So world peace is the answer to all our problems. This sounds very simple but the secret is: it is so very simple!!!!! We talk about it later. Now, I'm going to my friend Harry Loco to do the presentation of his concert tonight and tell my message to the people there."

Sorry that I didn't answer your mails earlier, you'll understand I hope. I didn't want to answer your mails too brief because I think (and you also) that it's all too important. You find an attachment with this mail, it's a letter to Paul McCartney. My friend Willem Vat has been visiting the London office of Paul yesterday and brought the letter personally, he made an appointment for that. The same letter has been sent to Bono. In this letter you can briefly read our ideas.

Dear Alan

Sounds like you're pickin' up steam! Shelli & have had some connection to most of the players, like all that footage we shot at Summer of Love's 40th in Monterey, including you & the People's Stage.

Here, there's been a surge of tourists coming to Woodstock in search for nostalgia. I've become a tour guide. We're designing special exhibits for the 40th, including events and multimedia. We are a living museum. So how would you like to to contribute? Any ideas? We allow some camping here.

We'll get back to you soon. It would be cool to have films from our archives being shown on tour to educate and entertain. I'm forwarding this to the Egginks, who have been courageous in their quest for New York legalization .

Please consider us for the advisory board. - Nathan

Aboriginal Visit for a Woodstock Celebration
Long before the First Americans inhabited North America the First Aboriginals led a vibrant, happy, healthy life in Australia. Years in between brought hardship and a deep withdrawal into the jungle. Everything changed in 1973 when hippies from around the world moved to Nimbin, Australia in New South Wales and developed a community for peace and love and fought for native rights. The new definition for hippie² is defined as a flower child, those of us who are more closely connected to the earth. That sounds like most of us!

These hippie activists fought the local bullies who were still rounding up Aboriginals and killing them for fun and folly. They fought the Australian government through the legal system and demanded that the stolen land be returned to the Aboriginals and demanded multiple occupancy living arrangements. These Nimbinites encouraged the re-introduction of ancient Aboriginal customs and tribal living as well as introducing hippie values. In fact, the hippies and the Aboriginals joined together as a tribal group to share in simple living values.

Today, these hippies inhabit an area the size of the Hudson Valley with over 200 intentional living communities housing seventy to five hundred members living simply and fairly. They have built unique homemade houses, alternative schools and amazing performance centers Most grow their own food, use solar energy exclusively and teach the values of the 60¹s. ³Dreamtime² teachings with spiritual connections learned from the Aboriginals are shared and acknowledged as part of their sustainable living lifestyle.

Make love not war is shared as gospel and their annual Mardi Grass celebration honors the Hemp Plant. Australia has already legalized marijuana for medical and industrial applications thanks to their pro-activist teachings and demonstrations.

Woodstock Museum shares in this peace and love message and has invited some of our sisters and brothers from Australia to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Woodstock Festival. Musicians, filmmakers, activists and motivational speakers will be coming this spring and will need housing, food and all the other extras that will help make this a truly remarkable gathering. With them they will bring guidance, music, dance, festival, ceremonies and art.

We are requesting donations to help further the cause. We need to purchase a very large tent that will house the visitors and function as an exhibition gallery. On exhibit will be over 180 photographs depicting the Nimbin hippies and the Aboriginal connection. Through this exhibit you can explore the rain forest region see how the activists helped save the Rain Forests by putting their lives on the line. ³Woodstock Downunder² a 1 1Ž2 documentary will run simultaneously.

Woodstock, NY and Nimbin, Australia are official sister-cities since 1993 and share many environmental concerns. Woodstock Museum was instrumental in making this official connection and continues to educate the importance of these issues that concern all of us.

Please join us in this endeavor, reach into your pockets and send us what you can.
Donations can be made through our website Pay Pal: www.WoodstockMuseum.org or sent directly to us at Woodstock Museum, PO Box 73, Woodstock, NY 12498. We can accept travel points from credit cards, blankets, small tents, etc. All donations are tax deductible. We are a 501(c) 3 educational institution charity organization.

I am interested in being a part of the planning of the Woodstock 40th Anniversary. I attended the 1969 Festival.

Since 1980, I have worked with many of the musicians who appeared at this event, including Country Joe McDonald, Barry "The Fish" Melton, as well as members of The Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and Big Brother & The Holding Company. I was also Tour Director for 4 years for Jefferson Starship, with original Airplane members Marty Balin, Paul Kantner, Jack Casady, and Papa John Creach.

I have also worked with David LaFlamme from It's A Beautiful Day, Nick Gravenites from Electric Flag, members of New Riders of The Purple Sage, Lydia Pense and Cold Blood, Banana from The Youngbloods, Jerry Miller from Moby Grape, and Woodstock MC Wavy Gravy.

I would like to see the uncoming celebration include many of the surviving musicians from that era.

Bio: From 1980 to the present has been the booking agent for such performers as the Dinosaurs, Big Brother & The Holding Company, New Riders of The Purple Sage, Country Joe McDonald, Merl Saunders, Nick Gravenites, Greg Kihn, Sundogs, Zero, Quicksilver Gold, It's A Beautiful Day, The Unauthorized Rolling Stones, The Sun Kings (Beatles tribute), Just Cream (Cream tribute), Heavy Petty (Tom Petty tribute) and numerous local and regional acts.

He was the band manager for the Dinosaurs (1982 - 1995), Big Brother & The Holding Company (1987 - 1989) and Barry "The Fish" Melton Band (1982 - present)

He was tour /production manager from 1982 to the present for Jefferson Starship, Big Brother & The Holding Company, Dinosaurs, Merl Saunders & The Rainforest Band

I would like to see an event that promotes the cause of peace, love, and hope rather than the sex, drugs, and rock and roll aspect that has been so highly glamorized and make it more about the anti-war and peace statement, adding the environment as a reason for the event. It seems that the original intent of Woodstock was lost in the last one. It's not that I have anything against sex, drugs, and rock and roll, but that was truly not what the event was about. It was about people coming together in unity to stop the war and promote peace, as I see it. I think the idea of everyone cleaning up after themselves like the fire breathers do is a great idea, too. A lot of the negative attention of the first Woodstock seemed to center around the mess that was left behind.
Some ideas I have are James Taylor singing "Shed a Little Light." Perhaps Heart doing "Dog and Butterfly" for the butterfly release or at least for the butterfly theme. Willie Nelson would be good with "A Peaceful Solution" and a speech on his Willie Nelson Peace Research Institute. Heidi Little has some excellent songs for peace as well. I know a guitar player who plays like Hendrix... even behind his head, behind his back, and with his teeth if you want someone who can re-create that aspect. I'll be jamming with his group tomorrow night here in Magnolia."

Bio: My name is Cal Jennings. My Cherokee name is Space Eagle. I'm a musician/singer/songwriter, a writer of short stories, and a poet. I am a member of ASCAP, Willie Nelson Peace Research Institute, Musicians and Fine Artists for World Peace, TED, and iPeace and am involved with many facets of promoting peace, including talking with politicians, Care2 projects, and whatever else that comes along in which I feel I have something to say or to which I can contribute. I work with musicians locally when I can find the time and have been helping musicians and actors get started with their breaks. I use Freecycle to help keep things out of landfills and to acquire things that are offered that I need. I worked for a major oil company for 15 years before I was disabled. I hated what the oil companies were doing and I considered the disability a blessing.

I got a DBA for Space Eagle Productions and want it to be a not-for-profit organization. At the moment I'm having problems getting a bank account for it. I have my Space Eagle Productions website set up for it and am continuing to work on it until I can get the issues resolved. I make and edit videos as well.

I've been appearing on Lorielle New's LiveShow channel and have my own LiveShow channel as well.

Dear Alan,

I am excited to be called upon to help with the Woodstock Anniversary celebration. You have my help all the way. My specialties as you know are artist A&R, personal management, show format/music director et al.. and I would be happy to set up a team to help with talent, in the selection and programming part of the Woodstock Anniversary. This will be implemented with all shows in the USA and internationally. I have some excellent ideas as well as fund raising ideas that would help sustain us for expenses as well as putting together our sponsorship program and having a suitable company handle that, some of which I have already contacted for my upcoming programs of Peace Full Sail and EuroRock. I also have a major tv broadcaster interested in carrying our signal.

I will talk to Bob Dylan's management in NYC and as far as Melanie is concerned, she would be a perfect addition as well as a few other talents associated with Woodstock. I will also contact othe management companies for talent that would like to be involved. We will get a roster going asap.

I have also contacted my DOP, Marco Aleggri from Italy who has been documenting what I do on film and he said yes to putting togehter a documentary on our process and the Woodstock gig itself. He's flying in to Zürich to meet with me.

So, count me in and lets get rolling! Well, we have already been rolling..Heidi and I have already talked as well as Caroline..also, I have Woodstock Georgia for a festival as well as a promoter there and another promoter in NC. In fact, having regional promotes may be the key for the regional shows and we would do the major cities... I will have this as well as the master plan down in a few...

Thank you again for the opportunity to help. Looking forward to doing this for peace.

I am truly humbled and honored to be part of your butterfly peace force and will do my best to uphold our visions and missions of bringing happiness and world peace to the people of Earth. ! The butterfly represents freedom as well as change, and these are the two most important elements for societies to recognize and act on for the world to be a better place, for all and not just a select few. Furthermore, the fact about caterpillars cells coming together to form one beautiful creature is one of my philosophies, and that is : working to bring peace in the world, bringing the world together as one people no matter what our religious beliefs are, or what country we are from or what color we are.

One loud voice to the world demanding peace. I put forward the challenge that every peace organization in the world, come up with a plan to unite as one, without losing any individuality of each organization, nor their own goals and visions, but to come up with a plan to bring us all together as one and use that power to address governments and politicians to move quicker toward peace, including hunger and disease help. My suggestion is a week of meetings, music and minds of all representatives from all over the world coming together at a summit. A summit For World Peace. Let's do it! This fits in with what I last discussed with you, Alan. I want to discuss this further with you and the rest of Musicians for Peace.

Dear Alan: It was a pleasure speaking with today, and to be honest an honor. You are doing some wonderful things and are working with some great people that I look up to very much.

I would like to make some suggestions how I can be helpful to your great mission. First, I would like to find a way to channel our events towards your goals, to have our events serve as a conduit to help educate and inform musicians and music lovers of the work you are doing and how to get involved. Second, as I work more and more on these events, I have gained some experience with guerilla Internet marketing and would be happy t lend a hand with Grassroots PR here in NY. I work as ASCAP in IT, and have contacts at BMI and EMI, and would be happy to spread the word to any of my contacts as I did today with my emails to others. I also can donate my web development skills as needed.

And of course, if there is ever a way to collaborate on the Woodstock 69 Tribute Benefit Concert in the future, I'd be delighted to discuss it.

I started booking bands in 1986 and since have been hitting the bards on a weekly basis looking for work for our various blues - 60's groups. Sometime in 2005 I had a compulsive thought to have a Woodstock Tribute concert with local Long Island bands. We held our first Retrofest on June 25 2005, About that time I started feeling empty with what was going on at work and started questioning about if there was a way to do something more meaningful and that can make a difference. Seeing how many wonderful people were using their gigs to help the victims of the Katrina Hurricane, my band and me decided to turn our next Retrofest (2) into a fundraiser. From that point on (we are up to Retrofest 19 and 20), each event raises money for a different charity. Most of them are related to helping children who are suffering from illness. More info about our events can be found at www.retro69.net

One of the things that emotionally have been so uplifting is to see the faces of older musicians get back on the stage and play the music they loved so much as youth. As these bands and individuals get involved in the project, they feel less marginalized and less jaded by the difficulty bar band scene that has made it harder and harder for players to perform.

The music is a tribute to the great POP festivals of the 60's and 70's. With each attempt at tributing Woodstock, we try to come closer and closer to the original arrangements performed in August 69, often following the same order of the set lists (A subset of course!)
As word gets out, some of the original performers have worked with us such as Ira and Maxine Stone, who played with Bert Sommer on the first day of Woodstock. We have also been in contact with Steve Knight from Mountain and Mark Naftalin of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, both great pinnacle keyboardists.

The goals of our Retrofests are as follows:

To help revitalize the great genre of music from the great Pop festivals of the late 60's - early 70's
To use music as a vehicle for doing good.
To create opportunities for musicians young and old to relive the genre and get back on the stage.

Indivually the concerts have yet to be big fundraisers. With the Butterfield Tribute and the Woodstock 69 Tribute for LI Cancer Care planned in the spring, we hope to raise $30,000. This is done as of now with a zero budget, and no paid publicity. The only expense we have is paying the house band members $60 a man to work a 6 hour event and share their back line with all the other bands; often that cost is covered by the bar or sponsors. Thus, the energy and enthusiasm of all the musicians allows us to create something wonderful out of nothing.

It has long been my dream to team up with others and take these events to a larger level.

This means running the event out on a farm, a campground, ECT with much more PR and better resources. The show would run a full day, coving one act from Woodstock after the other. Every band and performer would be represented, so when a band could not sample it we would play a recording of it. The event would bring together people who had been at Woodstock to share their experiences together with those who were too young to have been there. All bands would perform for free, just as done at Monterey Pop in 1967. Hopefully we would be blessed with the appearances of some performers from the original event, just like at the reunions done at Bethel over the past decades.

Thank you again for reaching out and I apologize in advance that with a full time job, two kids, and being here in NY I have limitations.

Regards and all the best, Allan Spielman

In 1969, the world witnessed a spontaneous demonstration of unity and an unfettered expression of joy tinged by the pain of mounting losses from an ill-conceived war. The immediate, incipient event was a concert held on a field in Bethel, New York, about 45 miles from Woodstock, but it was years in the making. It took a new generation, in a pivotal moment, to change how everyone saw themselves and their place in the world. The music was the reason that brought them to Max Yurgur's dairy farm, and it was the music, as well, that proved to be the instrument that reached into their souls and gave a single voice to their previously, inexpressible emotions. Music was the both the impetus and the instrument of change and enlightenment. It can be so today.

Previous attempts to reproduce the mystical atmosphere of Woodstock failed because they sought to recapture a lost, spontaneous moment in time. This is impossible. Each moment carries its own ineffable magic and, today, the next generation must reach into its soul and find the magic that resides in our moments and bring it to fore. In my music, I have tried to express the joy and pain and hope that is a part of all of our lives and is the very essence of the nature of our shared human experience. In war, there is loss and pain, but in its ending their can be healing and great hope. Each generation is the fragile link from all that has ever been to all that is to come. What will become of this day and what follows this day, is ours to determine. It is ours to create and to yield to the next tenuous link in the chain of human existence. It is my hope that by expressing our deepest emotions in music, a uniquely evocative art form, a new generation will create a magic of its own. It can be remarkable and even if it cannot be Woodstock itself, it can be that spark that rekindles the hope and promise that we all have to renew or to waste.

Bio: Most recently, Bri worked, and recorded, with Billy Masters along with other accomplished musicians and vocalists. Her music is distinct, as it can touch on the most extreme of human experiences, but never without retaining a sense of hope. Where other musicians of her generation are strident or morose or flippant, her music and lyrics are evocative and touch the spirit and stimulate the intellect. There is wisdom born from experience that far outstrips her years. Yet, her outlook is never weary or down trodden. The precious nature of each human experience transcends age or gender and the message that underlies all of her work is the inherent value that resides in each of us. We are all equal, we are all worth saving, and while we may all experience the same events by the end of our life, we are all unique, and by this we are bound. There is a subliminal message. Her music and lyrics provide the link we need to come to a true sense of hope for mankind; for, in the final analysis, despite all of our complexities and oddities, we are all brothers in the purest recesses of our souls.

Woodstock was a world changing event that children didn't even have to be alive for to feel the effects of today. I am one of these children. Every sound is a lasting sound and that is what we have to make apparent for todays generation. The music spoke so clearly, and sent such a message of peace in the 1960's that sometimes, as a youth myself, I wonder if it can ever be replicated. It was the common thread, the art form that resonated best with that generation. I believe even if the moment can not be replicated, the feelings can be. They must be. Generations united, we must have to power to do so. We must attempt to reach across the generations to have the same impact today that the artists and innovators of the past had on their generation. Change is possible, but it has to start with an understanding that we not only share the same goals, but share the same spirit. There's no better way for us to come to this understanding than through the impact of a musical experience.

Every concert or event has different requirements for success. From organization, funding and promotion, everything plays a role in creating a powerful an effective concert. I very much want to be able to contribute in any way that I can. I would first need to understand where your needs are, so I can use my energies to best fulfill them. In essence, where are we now, where do we want to go, and how can I help you achieve this dream?
