The 21st century is not a time of narrow, predetermined roles. The boundaries between careers and fields once considered quite separate are becoming more fluid, in response to a world with rapidly changing needs and developing resources. This may sound like a breakdown of order, but in reality it is a healthy progression.

The Earth has always been a place of interdependence.  Human society and its resources are now responding through awareness and becoming more interconnected. Sometimes established courses of study are not a good fit with a student's purposes.  He or she may see a unique gap in the world's tapestry, and filling that gap may require a variety of skills - a combination of threads and colors that universities have not yet seen a need to provide.

For this reason, education must become more responsive to the needs of its students. Many students find themselves struggling to find a degree program that matches their goals.  They are trying to squeeze their creative, original vision into an academic program, the scope of which may have changed very little over decades or even centuries.
